Ontology, how it all began: An ancient Chinese classification system for animals

An ancient Chinese classification system for animals is:

  • Those that belong to the Emperor

  • Those that have four legs

  • Wild dogs

  • Those that are likely to break a jar

  • Those that resemble flies, at least from a distance

  • Those that behave in a crazy way

  • Embalmed animals

  • Tame animals

  • Uncountables

  • Those that are drawn with a very fine brush, made of camel hair

  • Mythical beasts

  • Piglets, nursed on milk

  • Et cetera

UMMO ontology accessible for [re]viewing

Dear All,
The UMMO (user modeling meta-ontology) is now publicly available for [re]viewing via Protégé server.
To access it you need the following:

* go here and download/install Protégé (version 3.0 is preferable)
* start Protégé
  • close the default open dialogue
    * go to File→Open Remote Project...
    * enter:
    - User name: Guest (case sensitive)
    - Password: guest (case sensitive)
    - Host machine name: kt1.exp.sis.pitt.edu

    Using guest account you can only view the ontology. If you think of contributing to the UMMO please send me a message or add a comment to this post.

    Please allow some time for us to syncronize the Protégé server with the current stage of the 'paper' version of the UMMO.

    Thank you,
    Methodius

    'Grand' opening of the first UMMO blog ever

    Hello everyone,

    We are now officially open. The primary purpose of this blog is to discuss User Modeling Meta-Ontology (UMMO).

    UMMO is meant to structure the state-of-the-art in the field and serve as a central reference point and as a tool to index systems, papers and learning media. Such ontology is beneficial for both the user modeling research community and the students as it creates a shared conceptualization of the known approaches to building user models and their implementations.

    Everyone is welcome to participate in discussing the ontology and accompanying issues. The UMMO project page is located here.

    All the best,
    --Methodius
